Temecula Valley High School hosted its first football game of the school year on Friday, August 20. Last year the team placed 2nd in the Southwestern Division and has the potential of winning the league this year. At seven-thirty p.m, TVHS kicked off their season by playing against Moreno Valley View High school. The TV Golden Bears had won their first game of the season 57-0, but during the half-time show, the cheer team faced an unprecedented racial attack.

At half-time, Moreno Valley View cheerleaders were "victims of racial attacks,” according to the cheerleading coach, racial slurs and monkey noises were heard coming from the TV student section.

Later that night, cheerleading coach Kenya Williams posted on Facebook saying, “In all my years coaching, I have NEVER experienced such levels of disrespect and hate from an opposing school/team. ”Most of the girls on the cheerleading team were people of color. Williams stated the reason that her cheer team left early was due to them feeling unsafe and unwelcome. “My girls heard comments saying they were ‘on the wrong side,’ that they’re ‘not supposed to be here, That was the last straw that they felt unsafe and had to leave,” Williams stated in an interview.

After this incident, both schools reported to the Temecula Valley School District. The district sent an email to students and staff saying that they “embrace diversity and strongly condemn hate speech and offensive, hateful language or racial intolerance of any kind on the sports fields, in school buildings or anywhere on or off school premises. We will hold anyone found to have used such language while representing any of our schools accountable for their words and actions … we recognize that we have work to do in our schools and will continue to strive to promote equity, sportsmanship, respect, and fair play on and off the field.”

Social justice group, Temecula Unity, had raised more than $1,600 for Moreno Cheer and delivered the team pizza on August 25th, 2021. Many TVHS students protested against racism outside of their school to voice that racism will not be tolerated in their community. Racism is still a major problem in schools today. These key lessons are taught and tolerated at home. This indicates a huge race problem that is ongoing in Temecula.
