Kanye and Drake's New Albums Break Multiple Records

With Kanye’s Donda and Drake’s Certified Lover Boy dropping in the same week, the music industry has been in a craze. After many years of animosity and sneak disses, the competition between Kanye West and Drake finally has a winner. Or does it?

On August 29th, Kanye finally released his album, Donda, after months of teases and listening parties. The album broke the record for first-day Spotify streams (previously held by Drake’s Scorpion) with 94 million listens. With features from world-renowned artists like The Weeknd, Travis Scott, Jay-Z, Young Thug, and more, Donda took the industry by storm and set itself on track for the Album of The Year.

Announced two days before Donda’s release, Certified Lover Boy dropped on September 3. Blowing Kanye out of the water, “Drizzy” Drake sold over 600,000 units in the first week, opposed to Ye’s now seemingly minuscule 146,000. Drake also took back his record, surpassing Donda with 153 million day-one streams. However, Donda surprisingly beat CLB in second-day streams, with 102 million to 90 million listens.

While Mr. West has taken over the Billboard charts with his new album, it will only be a few days until Certified Lover Boy appears on “The Hot 100” and takes over. Although Drake has beaten Kanye for now, it doesn’t mean either should be taken lightly. The two new albums have completely blown away other rappers’ albums from their recent spotlights, such as Tyler the Creator’s CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST, Polo G’s Hall of Fame, and J. Cole’s The Off-Season.
