South Korean boyband BTS makes history on YouTube and Spotify with their completely in English, new song “Dynamite.”

On August 20, 2020, BTS premiered their single on YouTube and racked up a whopping 98 million views within the first 24 hours. The previous record holder was Blackpink’s (a female KPOP group) ‘How You Like That,’ which gained a little over 86 million views within the first 24 hours after its release.

On Spotify, a major music streaming platform, BTS overtook Taylor Swift’s “Cardigan” at No. 1 Daily Global Top 50 chart on August 21. According to Soompi, a website that covers Korean pop culture,  “Dynamite” had a total of 7.778 million streams, while “Cardigan” had 7.742 million streams. Along with this being a significant accomplishment for BTS, this is also a great step forward for the KPOP genre as no other Korean artist had ever been No. 1 before.

BigHit Entertainment, the company BTS is contracted to, stated during a press conference, “BTS sings of joy and confidence, treasuring the little things in life that make life truly valuable and special” and that “the song aims to bring a new surge of much-needed 'energy' to reinvigorate the global community in the midst of COVID-19.”

BTS will perform “Dynamite” for the first time on August 30, 2020, at the MTV Video Music Awards.
