Johnson & Johnson has agreed to a $230 million settlement with the state of New York, which prohibits the corporation from marketing opioids and confirms that such drugs are no longer distributed in the United States.

Johnson & Johnson is required to make a series of payments totaling $9 billion over the next nine years under the terms of the agreement to the state of New York. Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement that the pharmaceutical company has also committed to stopping manufacturing and distributing opioids in New York and across the country.

This settlement was brought about because of constant lawsuits against pharmaceutical companies regarding the opioid crisis.

In the United States, almost 50,000 individuals died from opioid-related overdoses in 2019. Opioid abuse and addiction is a significant national issue that has a negative impact on public health, as well as social and economic well-being. The entire "economic cost" of prescription opioid abuse in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is $78.5 billion per year.

Governments have claimed that businesses overprescribed the medicines, causing individuals to become addicted and consume additional illicit opioids, while firms have claimed that they provided the correct quantity of products to treat people with medical difficulties. Patients in need of pain medications will have a more difficult time getting prescriptions since pharmaceutical firms are starting to discontinue their opioid business.

Johnson & Johnson said in a statement that the settlement "is not an admission of responsibility or wrongdoing by the corporation."

Attorney James indicated that the state will increase funds for opioid addiction prevention in order to avoid a repeat of the crisis.
